對於台灣學生來說，赴美留學進修看起來似乎長路遙遙，主要原因便在於語言和溝通能力的問題，尤其是對於自己英文溝通能力沒有信心。相同地，對於美國大學校方而言，國際學生的語文能力是否達到標準，也是審核要件之一。因此，不少校方除了經由托福等相關留學考試成績了解申請者的英文程度之外，會在審核最終階段給一個「意外驚喜」，也就是以越洋電話方式進行額外面談（Phone
Interview），一方面決定是否接受你的入學申請，二方面則列作你是否得補修語言課程的依據。
不過，好加在中美之間有時差，美國校方多會預先通知電話面談的時間，讓你先有心理準備，並有時間預作演練。所以，奉勸有機會接獲校方面試通知的準留學生，別錯過這個表現留學企圖心的大好機會，面試前儘可能事先模擬演練。
由於情緒緊繃的關係，通常電話面談剛開始，老美說的前幾句話你可能都聽得「霧煞煞」，這時候建議你告訴對方"Would
you please speak louder because my phoneline is not clear."
此類的話。通常老美聽到之後，便會提高音量，並故意說得慢一點。結束的時候，則別忘了說”Thank you for calling!"
，表現態度大方、輕鬆應對的態度。
電話面談中常見問題方向有：
◎對於該大學的了解（the university）
◎未來研究興趣所在（research interest）
◎研究背景（research background）
◎研究經歷（research experience）
至於常見題目則有：
◎Why did you choose this university/department?
（你為什麼選擇這間學校/系所？）
◎Why are you interested in this university?
（這間大學哪兒吸引你呢？）
◎Would you like to study in a small but high quality university,
or a big university
like Harvard or Princenton?
（你喜歡像哈佛或是普林斯頓那般知名度高的大學，還是教學品質優良的中、小型大學？）
◎Have you applied for any other universities
or contact with other faculties in the
university?
（你曾經向其他大學申請入學或和哪位教授連繫過呢？）
◎What kind of research are you interested in?
（你對哪方面的研究有興趣？）
◎Do you plan to take the thesis or non-thesis option? If you
write a thesis, do you have any idea about the topic yet?
（你計畫寫論文嗎？如果有的話，你的主題會是什麼呢？）
◎Which program/course in our department intrest you?
（我們系上的那一個課程最吸引你？）
◎What is your opinion of _________ (a book; a director; a
controversial theory; a recent event related to you field)?
（你對 _________ 【相關領域的書、導演、理論、事件等】的看法為何？）
◎Please explain, as though you are talking to a student, the
